From the unknown, profound desires enter in upon us,
and...the fulfilling of those desires is the fulfilling of creation.
-D. H. Lawrence
The Light of Desire
There is no desire that anyone holds for any other reason
than that they believe they will feel better in the achievement of it.
Whether it is a material object, a physical state of being,
a relationship, a condition or a circumstance -
at the heart of every desire is the desire to feel good.
-Esther Hicks, "Abraham"

When the desire is too much to bear,
we often bury it beneath frenzied thoughts and activities
or escape it by dulling our immediate consciousness of living.
It is possible to run away from desire for years, even decades at a time
but we cannot eradicate it entirely.
It keeps touching us in little glimpses and hints
in our dreams, our hopes, our unguarded moments.

I am dead because I lack desire;
I lack desire, because I think I possess;
I think I possess, because I don't try to give;
When you try to give, you see that you have nothing;
Seeing you have nothing, you try to give of yourself;
Trying to give of yourself, you see that you are nothing;
Seeing that you are nothing, you desire to become;
In desiring to become, you begin to live.

If in any respect you find them [desires] beneath you,
the pursuing them will take you down;
if they are above you, then they will take you up.
If they are some of both they will take you round and round
in an ascending and descending spiral,
depending on which has the greater influence.
-Lyn Birkbeck
